Minutes of the Lakes Committee
May 18, 2009
1.The meeting was called to order at 7 P.M. Compliance with the open
meetings law was verified. Attending: Dave Fuhrman, Karen Geitz, Tim
Helgeson, Joan Whitehurst, Marcia Mercier, Josh Ziegler, Bev
Vaillancourt. In attendance were approximately 30 citizens.
2.Motion made by Dave, seconded by Karen, to approve the agenda.
Motion passed. Motion made by Karen, seconded by Dave, to approve the
minutes of the May 5, 2009. Motion passed.
3.Discussion followed on how best to inform others of the work of the
Lakes Committee. There was consensus that posting the agenda and the
approved minutes on the town website was beneficial. Citizen comments
included use of the radio to report on committee discussion and
dissemination of educational information via the mail.
4.When discussing rights versus responsibilities, Dave suggested that
the only responsibility lake users have is to obey all state laws and
local ordinances.
5.A great deal of time was spent studying the lake map and discussing
legislation headed to the governor’s desk that will restrict vessels
at no-wake speeds to remain 100 feet from the shore or structure.
Several citizen comments were offered, including the desire to ski in
the west narrows. Many individuals felt it was a safe area for
teaching young skiers to ski. Others believed that as long as people
obeyed the laws and showed consideration for other boaters, that
skiing in the area should not pose a problem. Those opposed to skiing
in the west narrows expressed safety concerns and noted concerns about
boating traffic in the area. There was strong consensus that
enforcement and education are paramount.
6.There was a short review of the DNR critical habitat study by Jim
Mercier. Some questioned whether the Lakes Committee should be
concerned about shoreline and critical habitat.
7.The committee agreed to post a Lakes Committee boat tour for May
20th at 6 P.M. – meeting at the Section 11 Boat landing.
8.The committee agreed to discuss the no-ski ordinance for the west
narrows at the May 26th Lakes Committee meeting and forward a
recommendation to the La Valle Town Board.
9.Motion made by Karen, seconded by Dave, to adjourn. Motion passed.
