Cornhole Boards – Tournament Vs Tailgating Boards

Cornhole Boards - Tournament Vs Tailgating BoardsFor those who’ve played cornhole or seen others playing it, they’ve probably noticed not all cornhole boards are created equal. Beside the usual differences concerning color and logo design lurks a more distinct variation; size.

In the game of cornhole, there are two different board types, tournament or “regulation” and tailgating. Tournament boards are approved by the American Cornhole Association and recognized as the standard size. The tailgating board is smaller and used primarily by casual players. In this article, we are going to explain the features, including the differences, of tournament and tailgating boards. Lets begin with the tournament variation.

Tournament “Regulation” Boards
Tournament cornhole boards, also called regulation boards, meet the standards set by the American Cornhole Association. They are used by serious players, tournaments, and leagues. They are longer and thicker than tailgating boards.

Below are properties unique to tournament cornhole boards.

  • 48 inches long
  • 3 1/2 inches thick
  • Weigh approximately 60 – 65lbs.

Tailgating Boards
Tailgating cornhole boards are similar to tournament boards, but shorter in length and thinner. The smaller measurements make the tailgating variation cheaper in cost and lighter in weight. The reduction in cost and weight have made them popular among casual players. A cheap price tag is easy on the wallet and the light weight is ideal for traveling. Tailgating boards can be easily carried to football games, cookouts, picnics, and more.

Below are features unique to tailgating cornhole boards.

  • 36 inches long
  • 2 inches thick
  • Weigh approximately 30 – 35lbs.

Common Features
Although tournament and tailgate boards are different, they do share some features. Tournament and tailgating cornhole boards share the following three characteristics.

  • 24 inches wide
  • Hole measures 6 inches in diameter
  • 9 inches from the top of the board to the center of the corn hole
  • Accompanying cornhole bags weigh 14 – 16oz and measure 6 x 6 inches. Many tailgating sets come with lighter, smaller bags, but because this varies we decided to put the bag weight and size in the Common Features section.

Determining Your Board Type
Knowing the difference between tournament and tailgating boards empowers you to make the right decision when buying your next set of cornhole boards. If you’re a casual cornholer, the tailgating set may be the beset fit. However, if you’re a serious player that plays in tournaments and leagues, the tournament boards are the way to go.

One thing is certain. Whether playing on tailgating boards at a backyard party or in an intense tournament on regulation boards, you’re sure to improve your game and have lots of fun doing it!
